The ISTE Lesson plan was created in the course, Internet Tools for the Classroom. The purpose of this project was to have students learn many new web 2.0 tools and create a more engaging classroom setting. In this lesson plan, students would develop a website but also include more web 2.0 tools to enhance the presentation of their research and learning. Students used the hosting site, Weebly, to build their website. Weebly is a “drag-and-drop” free webhosting service that allows for many other tools such as YouTube, photos and files to be embedded on the site. For 7th grade Georgia performance standards unit 5, “The Civil War,” students will choose a historical figure that was some how involved in key events that led to the civil war, impacted the civil war and/or involved in the reconstruction of Georgia after the war. They will build an informational website about this person and what influence they had on the Civil war in Georgia and the reconstruction of Georgia. Students would also use two more web 2.0 tools to enhance their website.
Standard 2.2 states that candidates model and facilitate the use of research based, learner centered strategies addressing the diversity of all students. This lesson plan shows mastery of this standard by developing a project for students that uses many avenues and strategies to create a researched based environment. It provides many approaches for addressing the diversity of all students by delivering a full schedule of expectations. This helps students of all learning styles to stay organized at work at an expected pace. This addresses students that may need extra help, so they may see the timeframe of the work that must be completed. This addresses students that need more challenging work, so they may work ahead if they feel there is not enough work. Since Darlington School is an international school, it is important for us to provide extra help for English Language Learners, ELL. By providing extra time before and after school, it gave opportunities for translation or show students how to set their MacBook up for international languages to help them complete the project successfully. With the high tuition costs, books and uniforms I sometimes find that parents don’t have Internet access at home.
The design and implementation of this lesson plan taught me the importance of the complete design of the lesson plan. Planning the lesson from start to finish and providing schedules, rubrics and expectations addressed the learner centered strategies thereby addressed the diversity and the importance of embracing and including all learning styles.
This project was a huge success and the director of the early learning academy came to the presentations. It was recognized that students who had been struggling in this class prior to the project made perfect scores. One student in particular that had been struggling with engagement and completing his work went above and beyond adding extra web 2.0 tools not listed on the requirements. The administrators at the school were very impressed with how integrating technology into this project enhanced learning. Previous years the students had to do a ‘cut-and-paste’ poster and were extremely excited to try something new. An additional benefit of this project was the teacher’s learning experience. I decided to target a teacher that had been struggling in technology integration. This teacher was doubtful at first and very worried that he would not have the knowledge to complete the project. With my help the project was a huge success in his learning as well. He is currently using this same project with his own enhancements for the new semester.
