For standard 3.3, candidates develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student learning and expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and administrators. The artifact I chose is a syllabus that was developed during the online course design process, as an assignment for ITEC 7480. The syllabus was distributed to students participating in the online course in the Spring of 2013.
This artifact shows that I learned and mastered how to develop, model and facilitate online learning. In this artifact I developed a good understanding for developing an online course and what must be involved to implement a successful experience for students. This blended learning course applies a variety of technology related tools to simplify the delivery of math content through a learning community of students. Also, this syllabus sets the framework on how the modules of the course will enhance and expand the content being delivered in the classroom. Some of the things that are so important in a good online course are communication, collaboration and feedback. Just because a class is completely online that does not mean you cannot create that same type of community that you have in a brick and mortar environment. Having good communication with your students and parents is a key factor in the success of your student’s learning in any environment, especially online because you do not see them face-to-face every day or at all. The second factor that is extremely important is collaboration. Students must have a sense of community when taking an online course. When developing this online course I learned to create, forums, activities and projects that allowed students to get to know each other and collaborate on class activities. I learned by developing projects how important feedback can be for students that are in an online experience. A designer and teacher of an online course must understand the importance of this feedback because students are not in a traditional classroom setting. Students need to see more feedback on their coursework in order to feel they are accomplishing their work correctly.
This artifact had a huge impact on Darlington School. After designing and implementing this class I was able to show administrators how well students enjoyed this course and by showing them the feedback that students really wanted to do more courses like this one, we were able to design a more concrete LMS that provided more blended learning. During the six snow days this year, Darlington School was able to have “Distance Learning” days and never missed one class. Students still participated in class from home and when spring and summer arrive, we will not have to make up a day for missed snow days.
