Reflection:
This artifact was created for my capstone experience and as a part of my job as Technology Coordinator at Darlington School. The standard, 5.2 Professional Learning, states that candidates develop and implement technology-based professional learning that aligns to state and national professional learning standards, integrates technology to support face-to-face and online components, models principles of adult learning, and promotes best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment. For this artifact, I show that I developed and implemented professional learning for my faculty on a regular basis. It also shows that I allow them to give feedback on their learning, so that I may continue to improve to meet their technology needs.
After much feedback faculty, they expressed the need for having a way to do their own training at home or on the go. The first artifact is an online professional development that I created for my capstone project. This project started out as just a orientation for new faculty but with many meetings and changes, it grew into a complete professional development opportunity for all faculty and staff. The wiki started with just the basics on how to use the computer and email. As the feedback came in, it began to grow based on the needs expressed by the teachers. It now contains many topics from basic use to copyright and blended learning. Teachers are allowed to complete sections of the professional development and report back to me or the academic dean that they have completed sections. All faculty are required to complete the online training and I assessed their completion by meeting with them after and evaluating their classroom performance with technology.
The second and third artifact are the in-house workshops that are given at Darlington School. The workshops are developed and planned based on the needs and feedback from teachers. For example, when the new operating system was released for the MacBook, many teachers inquired about the upgrade and the new features. The workshop and resources website was developed based around these requests. A one hour workshop was provided on three different occasions to ensure that most teachers could fit it into their schedule. The agenda for the workshop was posted to the website as well as resources for later access if they had more questions. One of the key points to developing a workshop is to provide the opportunity for feedback and follow up with the teachers. This third artifact showed a representation of that by allowing teachers to answer a questionnaire that would give feedback for one on one training or how to improve more professional development opportunities later.
These artifacts have made a huge impact on our schools improvement. Recently, Darlington School was able to provide distance learning days during the times we were unable to attend school due to bad weather. The teachers said that by having many workshop opportunities as well as the online training, provided them with the much needed skills to flip their classroom and provide a blended learning environment before the weather. By already having blended learning in place, it was easy to move right in to the distance learning days. Continuing to provide workshops is significant to the school’s ongoing improvement.
