Reflection:
This artifact, Data Overview, was created in the Data Analysis and School Improvement course in the Fall of 2013. This project was designed to give students the training in gathering data, understanding and manipulating data to prepare a presentation for improving schools and student learning.
This artifact shows mastery of standard 2.8, candidates model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results, communicate findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning by showing that I was able to gather the SAT scores for Darlington School over the course of three years, compare the data with other schools in our area, present the data and make recommendations to improve the scores.
This project gave me the opportunity to learn how gather the data from our data base, pull the data into Excel and make visual charts to present the data. Even though I have worked in Excel for many years it gave me the opportunity to understand more how to manipulate the data to properly communicate what I had found. Once the data had been analyzed and placed in a visual I was able to present this to administrators with suggestions for improving SAT scores at Darlington School.
This project impacted my school because of the research and comparing our scores to other schools in our area. By doing this, I was able to show that while our scores are good, they could improve. I made suggestions that we should offer more statistics classes as well as provide more SAT classes and tutoring for ninth and tenth grade students to prepare them ahead of time for taking the SAT scores. We are now offering all of these things and the school is hopeful that these small changes will improve our SAT scores in the future.
