The artifact that I chose for this standard was the multimedia design project for the course ITEC 7445, Multimedia and Web Design and Development in Education. For this project I designed a webquest for the sixth grade social studies class called “The Game of Life.” This webquest’s main goals are to help with the understanding of careers, personal finances and to help with the understanding of wants and needs. Another goal is to establish and enhance a student’s higher order of thinking skills.
This multimedia project shows mastery of standard 2.4, the effective use of digital tools and resources to support and enhance higher order thinking skills. Students were able to use a project that I created that was enhanced with technology to encourage higher order thinking skills. The webquest requires students to use their knowledge to follow the steps of task, process, evaluation and conclusion. The webquest allowed students to follow a path to completion; it encouraged researching, analyzing, planning and designing therefore developing and enhancing higher order of thinking.
By developing this webquest I learned the importance of the effective use of digital tools in the classroom and their ability to create an engaging classroom rich with fun, excitement, and learning. Upon implementation of this project the students buzzed with excitement over choosing their own careers, apartments and cities to live. From start to finish the students were full of anticipation and thrilled to work on the project and making it a huge success.
Students were able to use their MacBook to access this webquest. By having their own MacBook, this project allowed them to be in control of their own learning by providing them with a process, a set of instructions, and a timeline for completing the project with their device. The students used websites and Web 2.0 tools to complete the project such as Google Documents and spreadsheets giving them the skills of using these tools. Students also learned how to use different websites such as YouTube.com, Salary.com and ApartmentGuide.com, which increased their knowledge of how to navigate on the Internet.
Using digital tools is an excellent way to boost a teacher’s curriculum with projects and mini lessons that enhance higher order of thinking. By learning new online tools like developing webquests such as this one, I have learned and mastered how to use those digital tools and train teachers to use and include them in their normal curriculum. Since Darlington School has it’s own MacBook one to one program, it’s important to help teachers develop projects like these to use in the classroom. Now that I have learned to design them, I can help teachers with technology curriculum design, classroom management with devices and integrating more ideas that include technology. This project is still being used today by sixth grade every year and has impacted the teacher’s entire social studies curriculum. They currently are using many digital tools to enhance teaching and learning because of this project.
