Emerging Technology Project
Reflection:
For standard 3.6, Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources, I chose the emerging technology project from ITEC 7445. This project allowed me to research, select and evaluate new technology to be used at the school. For this project I chose Apple TV. Since we are a one to one school, I decided after researching, this device could be beneficial for Darlington School.
The standard states that candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. I show mastery of this standard because after researching and collaborating with teachers on many devices we saw the need for the Apple TV. I was given the approval to purchase two of these devices and placed them in a 3rd and 8th grade classroom. These classrooms were chosen because I wanted to test out the Apple TV in areas with two different devices. The 3rd graders have iPads and the 8th graders have MacBooks. It was our goal to use the Apple TV to project the student’s work from their devices on the Smartboard for collaboration and presentation. This device would help with classroom engagement by allowing the teacher to not only walk around the classroom with their device, but also project a student’s work at a moments notice on the screen for feedback, collaboration or instruction.
After evaluating and piloting this tool, I showed the emerging technology project presentation to administrators. The presentation consisted of what the tool was, how it impacted teaching and learning by providing a more collaborative and engaging classroom and the cost to put this device in every classroom. I also gave them a schedule of full implementation, cost and budgeting of the Apple TV. The schedule and budgeting consisted of :
The implementation went better than expected. After teachers started using their Apple TVs in the classroom, the news spread across campus of its success. I was able to get funding early and complete the purchasing of the devices throughout 2013. This device has impacted the school tremendously. Teachers are able to do even more than just project such as initiating the flipped classroom model by showing students where to find the videos or sparking interest for the blended learning model. They also play music during quiet time, annotate documents live with students, display pictures of student and teacher work, demonstrate apps, and seamless transition between video clips.
