This artifact, English Language Learners Report, was created for ITEC 7430. Standard 4.3 requires candidates to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. The purpose of this artifact was to work with a student to support her diverse needs and research ways that I could help her to use her MacBook to support her learning.
This artifact had many objectives such as, helping the student get an understanding of how she can use her MacBook to assist her with her English skills, translation tools and allowing the MacBook to speak to her will help with her English proficiency. For this objective, I observed the student using her MacBook to translate different websites to help her learn the language. I also observed her listening to her MacBook read documents and emails that she could not successfully read herself. This helped her to have an understanding of how she could use the digital tool to her advantage when she was struggling with her English skills. Another objective was to teach research methods for her research paper and have her understand the concept of searching for information. Sometimes for English language learners something as minor as researching or even searching on Google can be a challenge. I gave instruction on how to use Google, the school’s library catalog, libguides and other various research methods. I observed her working and ask questions about her understanding. Her English 1 teacher and I went over all the information she gathered about her research subject to see if she was getting a clear understanding about how to research.
This artifact allowed me to learn how to work with students of diverse needs and cultural differences. Since English is my native language I did not have a clear understanding of the struggles that students have who are not only trying to accomplish their daily studies but also learning the English language and our teaching methods at the same time. For example, the Chinese culture puts more emphasis on Rotes memorization, facts and figures rather than higher order and analytical thinking. This task allowed me to reflect on my current practices and change how I help our international boarding students. Now when new international boarding students arrive, I go over all of the universal access settings on their MacBook. This made a huge impact on the school because we now make sure all international students are comfortable with their devices right when they arrive by spending several hours with them one on one.
