Reflection:
This artifact for standard 2.6 is the online mini module. It was created in the course Introduction to Online Learning with the goal of learning how to develop an online mini course for students to complete in a time frame of one or two class periods. Standard 2.6 states that candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. This artifact shows mastery because I focused on instructional design when developing the module. The module displayed research-based practices by giving students the opportunity to research jobs, salaries, cities and apartments for their financial future. I incorporated digital tools and resources with students by using websites to research, Google docs for their research finds and a Google spreadsheet for understanding finances.
Some of the elements of creating an effective instructional design experience are to include digital tools, a course of action and a good assessment. All of these factors are included in my mini module and created opportunities that facilitated higher order of thinking skills and allowed student-centered learning. By allowing students to become decision-makers in their learning experience, it creates a more effective and engaging classroom setting. In this mini module, that incorporated a blended learning style, the students watched instructional videos. The students then researched on websites about salaries and apartments. Once they did their research, they completed worksheets on Google docs.
This impacted teaching and learning at my school because I learned that by using a wiki, I could develop more mini modules that create an enhanced and engaging learning environment. This project allowed me to assist the teachers at my school to use this in their curriculum. Darlington School will not have to make up snow days this year because the days that were missed due to weather were turned in to “Distance Learning Days.” Teachers created mini modules such as these to help with engagement during those winter days.
