The engaged learning project was created in the twenty-first century teaching and learning class. The purpose of this project was not only to enhance student learning but integrating engaging ideas of using more technology in the classroom. Also, or this learning experience the students developed a two to three minute public service announcement for Georgia residents explaining the impact the transportation systems had on the economy post WWII. The students will show how the interstate highway system, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Georgia’s deep-water ports, or the railroads help drive the state’s economy. They assumed the role of government officials by showing the citizens of Georgia, their audience, how these transportation systems benefit them. This authentic task will teach them all the aspects of how and why the transportation systems helped the state’s economy.
Standard 2.3 states that candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences. This project was designed for students that have been a part of the school’s one to one program for at least a year with extra help provided for new or struggling students. This artifact demonstrates mastery when I designed and implemented a project with students using digital tools to engage the students in a new learning experience. In years past the students would have written a paper on how transportation was impacted during post WWII. By giving them a timeline to research, create a movie, and peer edit, it created a student-centered learning environment, allowing the students to be more engaged and excited about learning.
The outcome of this project was a huge success. Students were excited to put their creativity to work and design something on a new level. By using the engaged learning concept and technology the students learned had a deeper understanding of the economy of Georgia in Post WWII and how it affected their lives even today. By using enhanced learning projects such as these it helped the students learning as well as the faculty. Many faculty members that used this project learned a new presentation tool, iMovie instead of using PowerPoint as they had in the past. Many faculty are seeing that students have become very bored with the same types of presentations such as PowerPoint, diorama, posters and booklets. With projects that infuse technology to enhance learning, students explore and create in an engaged learning environment.
