As teachers integrate more technology in the classroom they must also understand how to incorporate Internet safety and good digital citizenship into their curriculum. There are many ways teachers can keep students safe at school and at home. Educating students at an early age helps them to understand the importance of staying safe while connected. Since children are introduced to technology at a very young age now, it’s important to start good digital citizenship and Internet safety as soon as you introduce the technology.
The first strategy that teachers can consider is to educate parents. Some parents like to claim that they are “computer illiterate” or “not tech savvy”. Some technology teachers feel that it’s a cop out method. Some parents hope that if they don’t understand that maybe nothing bad will happen. By explaining to parents that it’s important to get a few technology skills can help keep their kids safe online. Common Sense Media gives 3 important rules for parents when they begin to make a plan to understand and teach their children Internet safety. “1. Even if you think you’re clueless, you’re still your kid’s teacher. 2. Our children learn from us -- not from what we say, but from what we do. 3. Good, safe online behavior begins at home.” By giving parents some information to read and encouraging them to step up and learn about technology will help with the education of Internet safety of children.
The second strategy that teachers can use to ensure their students are safe online is good classroom management with technology. Setting forth good classroom rules with technology will be the basis of not only appropriate use of technology but also Internet safety. On my wiki I wrote an article entitled, “Classroom Management with Technology, Simple Rules for Good Classroom Management with 1:1 Technology Program”. This article discusses how to build a good relationship with students that helps set those boundaries of good and appropriate Internet use in the classroom. One of the rules I talk about in this article is to not bore your students, this rule sound so simple but a great way to establish good classroom management. “Setting goals for use with technology as well as designing good integration ideas and projects will ensure you have good control over your students. With boredom come games and other non-educational activities. They will use the technology to keep their minds occupied if you do not.”
The third strategy is to have a good Internet safety curriculum to teach at the beginning of the year. By accessing many sites such as Common Sense Media, NetSmartz, or connectsafely.org a teacher can print off curriculum ideas to teach their students of all ages how to be safe online as well as good digital citizenship.
