I have tried many screencasting tools and my most favorite is Quicktime. The reason I enjoy using Quicktime is because it's quick and easy and I almost never have any technical issues. I have taught many teachers how to use this for flipping their classroom and it has been very successful for them. When you use your Mac with the smartboard the smartboard software has a tool that integrates Quicktime screencasting so lectures can be easily recorded and put online for homework or students that were unable to attend class during the lecture. This incorporates what the teacher writes on the board as well as what they are saying.
Since Quicktime is such an easy application, students can use it to give presentations as well as teach other students. When putting students in real world situations, such as teachers, they tend to learn the material easily. Students love to create videos and share them with other teachers and students.
Another great idea for screencasting is professional development. Technology coaches and specialists can successfully use this tool to create a video series to train teachers in basic computer use, technology tools to use in the classroom and even snippets of more complex tools for developing their own materials for the classroom.
For my screencast I explained what Google Apps and Google Drive is. It's going to be a series of videos I do on Google Apps.
